One of Cittaslow USA’s key priorities is to involve children and youth in their communities and help them to understand the importance of caring for their towns. The heart of our work is aimed at preserving for the generations that follow us, the quality of life and the unique personalities of each of our member towns across America. With this in mind, we look for ways to acknowledge the high quality work of organizations that meet this goal.

Kid Scoop News is a newspaper for and by students with the mission of connecting children to their communities and promoting civic involvement. As part of their work, Kid Scoop News publishes articles by student reporters on the actions of local children. Students have also contributed articles about school gardens, the importance of bees, local history and local parks, as well as interviews with local businesses and community servants.

Kid Scoop News, a Sonoma-based publication for children, is the recent recipient of a Parent’s Choice Award.  Established in 1978, Parents’ Choice Foundation is the nation’s oldest nonprofit consumer guide to quality children’s media. Only 20% of submissions receive their commendations. The work of Kid Scoop News is a close fit with Cittaslow’s interests in preparing children for the greater responsibilities that come with maintaining quality of life and well-being for all the members of their community, and helping to understand what it takes to preserve their town’s slow ways of living.
